Commercial boat insurance for vessels that earn their keep.
A boat that carries paying guests, runs tours or works in a fleet is insured as a business, on that business's facts. We start with what the boat does, who runs it, who is aboard.
The operations we talk through: fishing charters · sightseeing and harbour tours · water taxis · lessons and corporate trips. Yacht charters have their own pages, crewed and bareboat.
What changes when a privately used boat earns income.
The use the policy was written for is no longer the use. A private policy may not accept the new one; full-time paid use typically needs a different policy. Paying guests bring three more questions. Who counts as a passenger under federal rules, explained once on Bareboat Charter. Whether the vessel is eligible to carry passengers between US points, a question of citizenship and documentation for the actual vessel and itinerary. And who employs the people running it, on Boat Crew Coverage.
Adding lessons, corporate or overnight trips to the same vessel is a change to review, not an extension. A first paid trip on a private boat is a different page: where paid use begins.
Hull, liability, crew and entities, read for a working boat.
| Review | The working-boat question | Go deeper |
|---|---|---|
| Hull | On what value would the boat be paid, and does a working-boat deductible differ? | Hull Coverage |
| Liability | Are the business, the operator and the captain each insured, and is the limit right for paying guests? | Boat Liability |
| Crew | Who employs the crew, and does any policy describe them? | Boat Crew Coverage |
| Entities | Is each owning company named, and does the program accept a second vessel? Title alone does not decide all liability. | — |
Activities matter as much as the boat: swimming, snorkelling, fishing gear and tenders should be declared and accepted, not assumed.
Changes to raise before they start.
A new activity, route, vessel or owning company is a change to review before it starts, not after. The full list of changes worth raising lives once, on Our Approach. Bring any nonrenewal notice, with its deadline and your loss history.
The price follows the same facts: activity, guest count, cruising area, deductible, captain and crew. We do not publish averages.
