Coverage

Yacht and charter insurance starts with who does what aboard.

A yacht policy is written around facts: who owns the vessel, who operates it, who chooses the captain, where she goes and whether anyone pays to be aboard.

If you are chartering someone else’s yacht for a trip, these pages are written for owners and operators.

Owner, operator, charterer, manager, captain, crew. Each one changes the question.

On many boats one person holds several of these roles. On a charter they are often split. A role label does not settle who is liable or who is insured; the contracts and the policy do.

The owner’s question is whether the owning entity is the named insured. The charterer’s is who has possession and control. The manager’s is how responsibilities are recorded across owners and vessels. The captain’s is for whom they work on this trip, and whether the policy approves them. The crew’s is who employs them.
