Boat liability insurance: what it answers, and what it does not.

Hull coverage is about your boat. Liability is about other people: a guest, a swimmer, another vessel. Whether a policy responds depends on who was running the boat, how she was used and what the wording says.

What boat liability insurance answers.

It responds to claims by other people for injury or damage connected with your boat, within the policy’s limits and conditions. Some marine policies call this protection and indemnity, or P&I; the name matters less than the wording.

Two policies with the same limit can respond differently, because who counts as insured, which activities are accepted and what is excluded are set by the policy and its endorsements. Some yacht policies describe pollution, wreck-removal and marina additional-insured features; treat that as questions for your own wording, not a promise.

Who is insured when someone else is at the helm.

The owner, an owning company, a named operator, a hired captain and a charterer can stand in different positions. Some policies name approved operators or captains; others set conditions on who may run the boat. Check before you lend her or hire a captain. If an LLC or a trust owns the boat, the names on the policy should match.

A crew member’s injury is an employment question, not a guest claim; see Boat Crew Coverage. A household umbrella does not automatically sit over a boat, and no personal policy covers a charter: Liability Insurance.

There is no universal liability limit.

The right limit depends on how the boat is used, who is aboard, what your contracts require and what you own that a claim could reach. Ask whether defence costs sit inside the limit or on top of it, and which sublimits apply. Where a law or contract sets a minimum, it is a floor; Florida’s statutory livery minimums apply only to qualifying liveries.

The price follows the limit and the same facts: use, cruising area, guests, deductible. We publish neither a recommended figure nor an average premium; another boat’s number says little about yours.
