Recreational insurance, starting with how you use it.
An RV you live in, a trailer you tow twice a year, jet skis at the dock, an ATV on the family land. The vehicle and how you use it shape the policy.
Boats and yachts are on Yacht & Charter.
Living in an RV and vacationing in it are two different policies.
Insurers treat full-time living in an RV differently from vacation use. A motorhome you drive and a trailer you tow are different vehicles to insure. With a trailer, ask what the tow vehicle's policy extends to; damage to the trailer, its contents and its use while parked are separate questions.
Before comparing prices, settle four things: how a total loss is paid, whether belongings and custom equipment are included, whether roadside help is insurance or a service contract, and what applies while it is parked or stored.
Who operates it and where it is kept matter as much as what it is.
Tell the insurer about anyone who uses a vehicle regularly, and ask how the wording treats a friend who borrows it. Storage, a seasonal lay-up and any modifications or custom equipment each have their own terms; check with your lender before changing cover on a stored vehicle.
Whether a household umbrella responds for a jet ski or an RV depends on the insurer's requirements and on who owns it; see Liability. Renting one out is paid use, and a different conversation; see Commercial Use Coverage.
Five vehicles, and what the policy has to settle.
For motorcycles, watercraft and ATVs these are questions to bring, not product descriptions.
| Vehicle | What the policy has to settle |
|---|---|
| RVs and travel trailers | Full-time or vacation use; motorhome or towed trailer; total-loss settlement; belongings and custom equipment; roadside help; parked and stored use; a lender's own requirements; a business or LLC as owner. |
| Motorcycles | Who rides it and who borrows it; accessories and modifications; where it is kept and any lay-up; injury caused by uninsured or underinsured drivers. |
| Personal watercraft (jet skis) | Who operates it, including guests; where it is used and kept; whether it is ever rented out. Boats and yachts are on Yacht & Charter. |
| ATVs and UTVs | Who drives it, including children and guests; your own land, someone else's or trails; storage; modifications. No statewide operating permission is implied. |
| Golf carts | A registered low-speed vehicle is titled and carries PIP and property damage liability; a statutory golf cart is a different class, and local road rules apply. Carts driven on public roads, registered as LSVs or converted are on the Auto page. |
